Schubert…..makes tears catch at the edge of my eyes; such fragile hope, such powerful emotions. Ian McMillan, poet
All very welcome to this third streaming concert, the last one during this winter time.
To help warming up this last part of our winter, I would like to play for you some of the finest, comforting music, Franz Schubert’s four impromptus opus 90. Schubert has this wonderful gift to mix very subtly light and dark -“chiaroscuro”- in his music. You feel in his melodies warmth and light and at the same time you hear sorrow and weeping. I get this image of a lit candle with a drop of candle wax -like a tear- rolling out of a shining eye. Or like Schubert said it himself: “when I wished to sing of love, it turned to sorrow, and when I wished to sing of sorrow, it was transformed for me into love.” Maybe it’s the combination of these two elements , which makes it so recognisable for a lot of people and therefore has such a comforting effect.
To cheer you up even more I will play George Gershwin’s three preludes in his so typical mixed style of classical music and jazz. These three preludes form a nice cycle, fast - slow - fast, with the first influenced by the Brazilian baião, a music genre and dance style, the second like a blues lullaby and the third with some Spanish flavour in it.
Maple leaf rag, one of the first ragtime compositions by Scott Joplin, is an everlasting hit and inspired many other ragtime composers.
I will end the concert with “Happy” by Pharrell Williams :)
